Solidarity and collective action to help the victims of Petrópolis (RJ)

A wave of solidarity has taken over social media to raise donations of food, hygiene items, drinking water and clothes for residents of Petrópolis. The city, located in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro, was devastated by a strong storm, which occurred on February 15 and left, so far, more than 200 people dead, dozens of people still missing and hundreds homeless.

During a press conference, the governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Cláudio Castro, highlighted that the rain that fell in two hours reached an unprecedented volume, about 240 mm, which had not happened since 1932.

While about 400 firefighters, 200 police officers, many neighbors and relatives of missing persons are engaged in the search and rescue of victims, on the internet organizations seek to join efforts to provide assistance to the families of the imperial city.

The Petrópolis Human Rights Defense Centre is receiving donations of food, blankets, drinking water, hygiene and cleaning items.

The SOS_Serra organization is also receiving donations to target families affected by the rains in Petrópolis. However, it only receives financial support via Pix (mobile number key): (24) 99303-8885.

Terreiro Gratidão Sereno Manso is also collecting donations for families affected by the rain. The organization collects non-perishable food, drinking water, and blankets, in addition to personal hygiene products (soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, sanitary napkin etc).

Necessary mobilization for Petrópolis

In addition, according to the Petrópolis Department of Education, 38 schools that are open and functioning are working as support points to receive and welcome families displaced by the effects of the rains. According to the latest survey carried out by the city hall, there are 408 people sheltered in schools.
