The artists Fábio Henrique Bastos de Carvalho and Douglas Jacinto dos Reis, who form the Moss collective, created the project “Lugar de arte é na Rua!” – Place of art is on the street!-. With it, they were contemplated by the Aldir Blanc Law to aid cultural workers and produced five artistic murals that were completed throughout the year 2021.

The two artists met in the Architecture and Urbanism course at the Federal University of Tocantins, in the capital Palmas, and started to collaborate on artistic projects. One of the first fruits of this partnership was the facade of the UFT FM radio, which received the first mural produced by the collective.

The partnership between the pair of muralists had started at the production company Árvore Seca, coordinated by Fábio, where both produced illustrations for cultural events. The arts came out of flyers and now color public spaces in the capital of Tocantins.

Cultural actions in the streets, squares and parks of the capital of Tocantins

The difficulty of accessing so-called formal art spaces, such as museums, cinemas and galleries within the context of the Covid-19 pandemic is no longer an issue.

Through this initiative, UFT’s Palmas Campus, in addition to the walls in front of the Palmas General Hospital and the Indigenous Peoples’ Park, the 204 Sul square and a wall of the José Gomes Sobrinho Cultural Space were transformed into canvases for the signed murals. by the collective.

The project “Lugar de Arte é na Rua” can provide the population of Palmas with a new perspective on culture, both during its execution and permanently with the legacy of the construction of these works of art.

It is possible to see muralism as a tool for social and integrative transformation that brings together the most distinct looks that form part of the city and that give new meaning to public spaces.

Actions to continue pointing out that “Lugar de Arte é na Rua”

In an interview with the UFT website, Fabio Henrique Bastos commented on the beginning of the duo’s artistic activities: “I have a cultural production company, called Árvore Seca, and we developed, together, illustrations for our events. We ended up creating a friendship. We had many influences from  muralists from other states and countries and we also decided to try”

During the second activity carried out, in the second semester, the duo had the opportunity to count on the collaboration of the population in an experience that illustrated an internal square in the region of 204 Sul, in the capital Palmas.

They emphasize that the main objective of the work has been achieved, as the collective seeks social transformation through muralism, a movement that had its origins in Mexico, where one of the greatest exponents of this language in the last century, Diego Rivera, was born. This artistic structure presents a language using city spaces as open-air panels.
