Instituto Genivaldo Nogueira (‘Genivaldo Nogueira Institute’ in English) is located in the former Colônia Juliano Moreira, a space where the facilities of the last asylum in Rio de Janeiro were located, which was closed on October 27, 2022, in Jacarepaguá, West Zone of Rio, where 99% of the residents are former employees of the Colônia, who, over time, became owners of the houses that made up the Colônia asylum complex.

The institution offers various types of free activities such as film and theater classes, Jazz, Jiu-Jitsu, eye exams, Poupatempo (document service), psychological care, access to a library, ballet classes, English and French, audio and video, soccer, native therapies and others.

The institute was born in mid-2014 when it started its activities with small actions that took place within a space provided by the local Residents Association. One of these small actions was school tutoring for some children.

How the Genivaldo Nogueira Institute was created

The idea of the name came up when the daughters, still children, Milena and Mirla Nogueira, residents of Jacarepaguá, had to do a school assignment whose theme was the occupation of their father. During the execution of the work they discovered that their father did a lot for people, so they decided to honor him in life with the creation of the institution, since he was already, at the time, a community leader. And so the Genivaldo Nogueira Institute was born with the aim of caring for and improving the quality of life of young people, children and adults living in the territory of Colônia Juliano Moreira and its surroundings, through various activities, since there are not many options for culture and leisure in the locality. The initiative was institutionalized more or less six years ago.

Carlos Alberto Costa, better known as Bezerra, secretary of the Genivaldo Nogueira Institute, says it is important that people know that the institute does not discriminate against beneficiaries and that they can be residents of any other territory that will be attended in the same way.

He also talks about the social impacts caused by the activities developed in the territory. “We know, through the parents, who also attend the institute, that the children we serve are managing to do better in formal school and that education and discipline at home have improved a lot. And we also have the example of Gabriela, a teenager who was our student at the age of 14 and today is a volunteer, multiplying and teaching what she has learned to the younger ones as a volunteer. She teaches theater, jazz and contemporary ballet at the institute”, he concludes.

The institution has precious partnerships with Fiocruz Mata Atlântica, Museu Bispo do Rosário, but still has many necessities and needs your help.

How to help?

You can help by donating wind, string and percussion instruments.

The institute also needs a volunteer who specializes in tuning pianos, as the Navy has donated one, but they do not have the funds to pay a professional.

And if you are a martial arts teacher or project developer, the institute really needs your collaboration.

The Institute occupies a former infirmary for the mentally ill, at Rua Núcleo Rodrigues Caldas, 3400, houses 2 and 7, Colônia Juliano Moreira, Curicica, RJ.
