The Casa da Mulher Carioca provides psychological support for victims of domestic violence
The goal is to create an environment of interaction and female empowerment, in addition to offering psychological and legal support
The Casa da Mulher Carioca (Carioca Woman’s House, in English) is a facility created by the Special Secretariat for Women’s Policies and Promotion in Rio de Janeiro, providing spaces for the promotion of rights, empowerment, and training. The first unit, named Elza Soares, was inaugurated on October 26, 2022.
The Casa da Mulher Carioca (Carioca Woman’s House) is a space for the promotion of public policies for women. Its objective is to develop an environment of interaction, training, and female empowerment through the application of effective strategies aimed at preventing situations of violence against women. It also focuses on the exercise of citizenship and the construction of autonomy for participating women, facilitating access to rights and providing qualified assistance through various services and activities.
Through the exchange of experiences in collective activities such as workshops, group discussions, professional training, among others, as well as individualized sessions mediated by a multiprofessional team composed of social workers, psychologists, educators, and lawyers, the Casa da Mulher Carioca contributes to the social inclusion and citizenship exercise of women in the state of Rio de Janeiro. This is achieved through the restoration of self-esteem, autonomy, and the promotion of female empowerment.
All units offer psychosocial support, legal guidance, pedagogical guidance, free courses, and professional training workshops in various areas. Additionally, they provide lectures and other collective activities covering gender-related issues. The workshops aim to qualify participants for autonomy, financial independence, enhanced perception and development of skills, knowledge of new and different expertise, and the construction of support networks. They are targeted at women who wish to enter the job market.
All activities are free and in-person, with a typical duration of 32 hours over three months, with weekly classes of 2 hours. At the end of each course, a graduation/celebration is organized by the unit’s team in collaboration with the instructors.
Criteria for participation: be a woman, reside in Rio de Janeiro, be over 16 years old, and have a Civil Identification document with a photo.
