New counsellors take office at the Conselho Municipal dos Direitos da Mulher
The new councillors of Codim – Conselho Municipal dos Direitos da Mulher do Rio de Janeiro, linked to the city hall of Niterói, in Rio de Janeiro, took office on January 16
The event was promoted by the Secretaria de Políticas e Promoção da Mulher and took place at the Palácio da Cidade, in Botafogo. Several authorities were present, such as the mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes, who participated in the first meeting of the new Council; the Secretária Municipal de Políticas e Promoção da Mulher at Rio City Hall and the president of Codim, who presented the diplomas to the new counsellors and substitutes, Joyce Trindade; the first black judge and judge in the State, Ivone Ferreira Caetano, among others.
The elected councillors, who are civil society representatives, and the councillors appointed by the public authorities, will form the deliberative body over the next four years.
According to the institution, Codim is a Council that develops public policies that guarantee women’s rights in their multiple dimensions, concerning racial, ethnic, generational, and religious differences, sexual orientation and women with disabilities.
Throughout 2023, the institution provided more than 5,500 services in the city. The Codim structure comprises 22 full-time councillors and four substitutes appointed by the mayor, with 11 full-time members and two alternates representing public authorities and 11 full-time and two alternates representing civil society.
Since its inception, the Council has sought to be a strategic space to encourage other municipal bodies in the development of public policies aimed at women. It has the objective of exercising cooperation between civil society and government bodies, monitoring the development and improvement of policies and public services for women in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

“We (Codim) are the continuity of pain, joy and struggles. We are the continuation of women who said, let’s go a little further because we deserve public policies; let’s go a little longer because we are people; let’s go a little longer because no one can touch our body; let’s go a little further because our health is ours; Let’s go some more because I want to say enough is enough. Let’s go some more.”
“And little by little we advance and, if there is a setback, we stop, breathe, recover and return. And so we have consolidated and continue to consolidate public policies for women.”
Here is a speech from the judge during an interview with Coluna da Neuza: “With this change, we hope that all counsellors will act as before again, it is a change within the institutions, there are many women who are being empowered and we need it”, he ends her.
