What does LED mean?

The acronym LED stands for Diodo Emissor de Luz (Light-Emitting Diode). It is a semiconductor electronic component that has the property of transforming electrical energy into light, through electroluminescence. This is the process that gives LED lighting the lowest energy consumption.

The device is capable of emitting light efficiently and economically, therefore it is an interesting alternative for public and residential lighting. The first LED was created in 1963 by American engineer and inventor Nick Holonyak. At the time, the component only had the capacity to emit red light.
