Every day, many Panamanians have to travel to Panama City to start or continue their cancer treatment. For those facing financial hardship, finding a safe and decent place to stay during therapy is often a challenge. For 29 years, La Casita de Mausi Foundation has become a place of refuge, filled with care, dignity and support for people living through this difficult time

La Casita de Mausi Foundation was born from the love of a mother who lost her daughter to cancer. In her memory, Bárbara decided to fulfill the dream that Carol could not achieve in life: to create a safe and supportive space for people with limited means facing the disease. On September 18, 1996, this nonprofit organization opened its doors with the goal of helping improve the quality of life for those who come to the capital to receive treatment.
In Panama, specialized cancer care is highly centralized in Panama City, which means that patients from rural areas often have to relocate for extended periods. This situation places a heavy emotional, physical, and financial burden on many families, especially those without social security or family support.
That is why La Casita de Mausi Foundation offers free temporary lodging for adults with cancer who are referred by the National Oncology Institute (ION). The Foundation provides a comprehensive support program that includes housing, meals, transportation, medication, clothing, and basic personal items, all at no cost to the beneficiaries.
After 29 years of social work, more than 18,200 people have been welcomed at its facilities, receiving compassionate care and support with food and lodging.
“La Casita de Mausi offers to us an environment of emotional support, with volunteers who provide companionship and activities that lift our spirits during this challenging process. Beyond that, they treat us with warmth and make sure we have a safe and suitable place to stay,” says “María,” a frequent guest of the foundation.
According to health statistics, Panama records 14 new cancer cases daily, with approximately seven related deaths each day. Data from the National Oncology Institute (ION) indicate that between 14,000 and 16,000 people receive cancer treatment each year, with a 17% mortality rate. More than 3,000 cancer-related surgeries are performed annually. Cancer is the leading cause of death and one of the most significant public health issues in the country.
Dignified Social Service
The NGO offers shared rooms with a total capacity of 32 beds, organized by gender and adapted to meet the needs of guests, especially those with limited mobility. Each guest has a clean, peaceful and thoughtfully decorated space that supports their emotional well-being.
As part of its work, the foundation provides breakfast, lunch, dinner, and two daily snacks, with nutritionally balanced menus tailored to the needs of those undergoing demanding treatments. Internal data show that over 29 years of service, approximately 324,000 meals have been served in their dining room.
Once housed, the foundation coordinates daily transportation to the National Oncology Institute, ensuring patients can attend their medical appointments without interruptions or worries about how to get there. Additionally, for those unable to afford complementary medications or supplies such as diapers, creams, or personal care products, the foundation takes necessary steps to ensure access. This support aims to help patients maintain adherence to their treatment.
To continue its work, the NGO relies on various volunteer initiatives that help sustain its facilities and services.
- Corporate volunteering: companies that contribute through cleaning days, workshops, bingo events, or donations of supplies. For example, a company can sponsor a room and provide the resources needed for a comfortable stay.
- Student volunteering: young people who participate by completing community service hours or internships, offering support with enthusiasm and commitment.
In addition to volunteer work, Casita de Mausi organizes special events to raise funds and raise awareness about its mission.
- Annual Bingo at Club Unión: A traditional event that brings together families, friends, and companies for a night of entertainment with a meaningful cause.
- Mausifest: A family-friendly fair full of activities, games, culture, and music, where both children and adults can have fun while supporting a noble cause.
- Auction: #ArtistasporCasitadeMausi, which includes a collaborative project with various artists to auction items.
