The Brazilian Association of Medicinal Cannabis, better known as Santa Cannabis, aims to promote studies on Cannabis Sativa, welcome patients, refer them to doctors, supply the medicine and help with legal authorizations for planting. It has two bases, one in Florianópolis, capital of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil and another in São Paulo, capital, but with national operations.

Pedro Luís Sabaciauskis, businessman and president of the association, better known as Santa Cannabis, explains how this interesting work began.

“Santa Cannabis was born out of a family need. My grandmother has been suffering from Parkinson’s disease for over eight years, and when we started her treatment with Cannabis, we noticed an incredible improvement and, in the face of this, other people from the Parkinson’s Association, in which she participated, wanted to do the same treatment. So, we, the founders of the association, joined forces with these patients, and then the association started to take care not only of patients, but also of many sectors of society that wanted and want to work with Cannabis.”

In addition to this reception, Santa Cannabis provides medical and legal advice and a course on planting and extracting the medicine (necessary for the person to enter the Habeas Corpus) and we generate scientific research with interested partners. We also use our communication, calling for public opinion to discuss the matter and hosting medical professionals, which results in an exchange. We raise issues about Cannabis according to what they want to study, and they reciprocate with the technical knowledge within the researched areas.

According to Pedro Luiz, treatment with Cannabis treats several diseases, such as Autism, Tourette and Dravet Syndromes, Refractory Epilepsy and others.

For the association’s president, the biggest challenge is to change people’s mentality in relation to medicine. In general, he continues, society has difficulties in discussing this subject. Another challenge is public recognition of the work carried out by the association, and proving to the State and society that this work is very important not only for patients, but also for the development of the country. Cannabis is a special plant that can help patients a lot, in addition to generating employment, income, and other benefits. Today there are 1400 patients, but more than five thousand people have already been treated, most of them elderly.

Pedro Luís says that, to carry out this work, Santa Cannabis faces some laws and takes risks, but that each patient treated is a victory and that the institution’s greatest need is to be publicized and have the work multiplied.

The hope of everyone involved with Santa Cannabis is that the authorities wake up and recognize this wonderful work that improves and increases the life expectancy of people undergoing treatment.

Testimony

“Cannabis sativa is a great medicine to treat different types of diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, chemical dependency and others, and it is improving the quality of life for many people. Participating in Santa Cannabis, for me, was a great turning point. I always wanted to participate in some way and because I am a patient, I started working as a volunteer before 2018. I suffer from generalized anxiety, insomnia, I was a smoker and I managed to quit smoking using Cannabidiol. Today I am no longer a volunteer, but I work with a purpose, which is to bring knowledge about Medicinal Cannabis to as many people as possible.”

Marcus Bruno, journalist, press officer and patient at Santa Cannabis.
