The award aims to stimulate scientific interest in public schools in São Paulo, focusing on community engagement and awareness of relevant topics, such as mental health and gender equality.
Promoting science in public schools
The theme was Um Mundo Melhor Para Todos, aligning the award with the Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável (ODS) (Sustainable Development Goals), with the intention of promoting reflection on the role of science and achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda. The winning groups entered projects in the areas of health, environment, history and geography.
Amanda Costa, climate activist and scientific researcher, was the master of ceremonies. The event was attended by professors and students from the winning projects, as well as representatives of the institutions behind the initiative: Marco Antonio Zago, president of the Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP); João Alegria, general secretary of the Fundação Roberto Marinho; and Vahan Agopyan, secretário de Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação do Estado de São Paulo.
The objective of the award was to encourage the development of scientific activities in public schools and promote student and school community engagement with science and its applications in education and life.
The award mobilized around 180 schools from the state and municipal networks in the state of São Paulo, in addition to federal institutes of technical and vocational secondary education and the Centro Paula Souza.
In order for their implementation projects to be evaluated by the panel, students and teachers participated in training sessions on an online platform run by Canal Futura and Fundação Roberto Marinho, with guidance on the development of research and audiovisual production projects. Everyone received certification at the end.
“When analyzing this year’s award winners, we are very happy to see that people working together, analyzing problems around them, come up with very simple and viable solutions, which can transform everyone’s lives”, stated João Alegria.
