An inspiring Story: Ángel’s Journey

When Ángel joined Casa Hogar BENCALETH in 2022, he was 11 years old. He was not able to eat by himself or communicate well. He had grown up in a place without the right conditions for his development, but his life started to change when he arrived at this home. Today, after receiving therapy and emotional support, he can hold his own utensils, express himself more confidently, and be part actively in daily activities at home. His progress clearly shows the purpose of this organization: for every child to grow at their own pace with the professional and caring support they deserve.

For more than 30 years, Casa Hogar BENCALETH has worked to protect and support the full development of children and adolescents with disabilities in Tegucigalpa. Its goal is to provide a safe home and real chances to grow for those who have been left out by the care system.

Facing this reality, Casa Hogar BENCALETH has become an effective and caring solution. Located in the Cerro Grande neighborhood of Tegucigalpa, the institution offers a complete and personalized care model that meets the needs of each case. Through a multidisciplinary team, BENCALETH ensures that every child has access to essential services and the chance to develop independence and dignity.

Commitment to development and inclusion

“Many of our children have been referred by social protection institutions. Most of them do not have a supportive family environment. Our commitment is to provide not only comprehensive care, but also a family, structure, and the opportunity to grow as individuals with rights,” said Dora Castellanos, director of Casa Hogar BENCALETH.

Since 1989, the organization has welcomed children with diagnoses such as cerebral palsy, microcephaly, blindness, and muscular dystrophy, among other conditions. Currently, the institution cares for 20 children and young people who live at the home, providing them with specialized care and a structured routine that supports their physical, emotional, and social development. In addition, 40 children and adolescents receive virtual education and are evaluated every two months, as required by the Ministry of Education. This is possible because the “BENCALETH” Basic Education Center is officially approved by the Ministry.

“Our approach is personal and human. We make sure each child has an individual development plan, with access to healthcare, education, rehabilitation, recreation, and emotional support. But above all, that they feel part of something: that they know they are not alone,” added Castellanos.

A purpose-driven model

Founded by Master Rafael Antonio Domínguez Zapata, the Casa Hogar was named in honor of “Benito,” Carmen, and Carleth, three Honduran siblings whose story inspired the creation of a safe and dignified space for the most vulnerable children. Today, the institution stands as a national reference in the fields of disability and education, with a clear vision for institutional strengthening and social impact by 2025.

As part of its program, the center also encourages learning new skills through jewelry and screen-printing workshops. These are designed to help residents become more independent, creative, and confident. The center also works closely with public institutions, donors, and partner organizations to keep its services running over time.
